We see the success stories of these great people and have a clench in our hearts and wish we could be in their shoes. Jealousy and even self-pity can creep in without us even realizing it. Rather than doing anything about it, we dwell on the fact that we don’t have what they do. I will admit to doing this myself. Rather than wishing things would be different, I am going to show you how to make your wishes and dreams a reality. Set your eyes on your target and with lazar like focus shot for your goal and it will become a reality.
1. Start with the big picture.
To make a success of something there was no small amount of planning. Whether it was in their heads or on paper, the success only happened by thought and careful planning.
Where do you see yourself in five years? Is it staying home with your kids while bringing in a second income for your family? Or are you dreaming of being known in your industry? We all have a place we see ourselves in the near or distant future but how do we get there? Write down all of the details about the life you dream of living in five years or even ten years. Where will you be, what will your finances look like? Do you have specific livestock you want to be raising? Write down every last detail that would make your dreams complete.
2. Break it down into steps.
Take that big picture and break it down. What needs to be done to make the big picture happen. Is it raising cattle, hog, lambs or chickens? Do you have the shelter and containment needed to get started in these animals or do you have a few building projects in your future? How about the level of livestock you have? Could you bring a higher income if you started raising show quality livestock?
Can people find you? People will not come to you just because you raise livestock. They have to know what you do, why you do it and what your goals are. Visibility is something that you might need to start working on if you want to increase your bottom line. Read our blog post on visibility plans and why they are important..
Take a look at where you are now. Is there any aspect that you are currently doing that will help you get to where you want to be? There is a possibility that you are raising a certain species of animals or have involvements that may not be moving you in the direction that you want to go in life and in business.
3. Break the steps down into tasks.
Yep, we are going to break those steps down even further. Take each step that you wrote down and give each one its own sheet or half a sheet of paper and write down the following things about those steps.
- Things you already have that could be used to make this project happen.
- Things that need to be built or bought.
- Time it will take to complete the project.
- Your deadline to have it completed.
4. Be willing to tweak your plans.
As we go along on our entrepreneurial journey our business will grow and change just as we will grow and change. We have to be flexible and willing to adjust our plans.
Patience is an aspect that will never go away from the entrepreneurial life.
